Additional Pollers?

I sometimes see references to additional pollers.

Does this require additional licensing? If it does, is there a seperate product to buy to just get a second or third poller or do you have to buy a whole NPM license set.

We have a relativley large field site that could really use its own poller that reported its findings to our main poller in the corporate HQ over our MPLS link.

Yes, IP SLA is the right short-term solution. We'll get to remote pollers; in fact, we have a team working on it right now as I type this, but it's a big and longish project.

If you have NPM and you need an additional poller, you would need to purchase it, see here for more info

The really crazy part of this, is that I called and opened a ticket with SolarWinds asking about this, and was told I had to purchase another license to do this!!!

Your best bet is to contact your sales rep to see what you would need, cost etc.

Whoa, hold off the party!!!

The SLX Polling engine that your referenced is 13K, the same cost as our 2000 node Orion NPM!!!

Is there really no cheaper way? I don't want to poll more than the licensed 2000 nodes we are licensed for, I would just like to be able to poll from two different machines...

This is absolutely a deal breaker.

I need like a SL500 Polling Engine, but the only option they have is an unlimited poller.

So first, why do you need an additional poller? Can you not poll the other site from the Orion server?

We have our corporate HQ where our server farm is and the Orion NPM lives.

Across a fairly saturated MPLS link, we have a site "A" that has a good portion of the remote devices we wish to poll. Say, 60% of what we want to poll remotely.

As is, all of our ping stats factor in the quite variable delay times involved with the MPLS link. We would love to be able to poll all the nodes at site A from a machine in Site A, and forward the results up so that they are included on the corprate HQ NPM server.

I've emailed our reseller the question but wanted to know, if we have the Unlimited SAM License does that mean I can add an additional Poller at no extra cost?

bootneck1111 No, additional pollers will be an additional cost. Unlimited SAM is only unlimited for that specific polling engine and actually does have limitations based on total throughput.

It's come up a few times before, my personal opinion would be to change the title of the product to exclude "unlimited" as it's not actually unlimited and we all get the fun task of explaining that when we need additional licenses purchased for a five-figure sum each go around.

mbird I as well as others have had that conversation with Product Managers at SolarWinds and I wouldn't be surprised if the name were to change in the future.
