Component v Node

Hello,

Quickly, I am new to network monitoring and newer to SolarWinds.

We have just setup our NPM and out of the box we turned off every alert. We are going thru the alerts one at a time. The first rule that we customized was when a node goes down. That one is working well. Now I get to the next rule which is to alert when a component goes down. If the node is down, wouldn't the components also be down? The out of the box rule speaks of both the node and a component being down. I'm struggling with that one. I'd appreciate help understanding this one.

We copied it and adjusted it to suit our needs. Limiting the scope to our Cisco gear, and then specifying hardware sensors.

Reading is a skill. I re-read the rule and it says when the status is not set to down for the node and yet the component is down. That makes sense to me. So my follow-up question would be: Is this a rule that you use out of the box or do you have it monitor a specific component of a node?

The components are usually targeting something else like an application component on a server node. So a server could be up, but there could be something still wrong with it.

Another possibility is a hardware component, say a power supply sensor on a network node. This is more like what we are using here.

We are basically using SolarWInds at this stage to only monitor networking equipment (Switches, Firewalls, etc). Would alerting on the out of the box component tell me like when a Switch is up but the fan died?

Yes, it would. I have an active alert for a bad redundant power supply as I write this, but the node is still up and running.
