Adding MIBs in v8

Hello All.. am currently playing with v8 and am a little stuck... anyone have any idea how to actually add a new MIB to the Orion stack??

I have added a Sinetica Netcom box to the device list but is states that this does not support the standard inferface MIB.. so I now want to add the Sinetica specific MIB to Orion so I can then monitor the temp in my datacentre...

Ideas would be nice... the help just points me back to the old versions documentation..

In System Manager, click on File-> Custom Pollers.

.. I know about this bit... however it is not as cut and dry as it would seem....

When I add the particular device to the tool it state that it does not support the interfaces snmp mib... when I then go into the custom mib tool the device does not appear in the list.... other standard devices do..

I am having the exact same problem with a Sensatronic Temperature Probe. I have updated to the new beta released yesterday, still not working.

I'm also having issues. I tried adding a custom OID for cisco QOS information, when I add the OID it says it polls successfully and returns a value, but I'm not getting any information from it, and my event log says its not supported.

Requested OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.166.1.15.1.1.11.194.4250097. is not supported by the target 206:0.

This was also a much anticipated feature for me, and I must say I'm a little scared it doesn't seem to be working yet.

For the devices like the Sensatronics device, I haven't worked with these in a while but last time I did they had a very limited SNMP agent. Orion requires that monitored devices support some of the minimally required, RFC mandated MIBs. For instance, the device must support the SysObjectID (1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2) for Orion to validate SNMP reachability, valid SNMP authentication, and to determine the device type.

If you have one of these devices and can make it available for us to poll from our R&D labs, we can take a look and see what the issue is. Just contact us at Development@SolarWinds.Net.

There are a couple of things that could be causing this issue, but I'm wondering if it's an item we've seen in the labs and resolved after the latest beta was shipped. When did you download Orion v8 from the FTP server?

this sounds a bit on the silly side to me.... when I add the snmp string to the Orion manager it finds all the details about the device with no problems at all.... it finds the location and owner etc so surely snmp is working and authenticated... it even sees the device as 1.3.6.1.4.1.3711.7.1

The issue only occurs when you try hit the list resource button and the tool returns a 'does not support the interfaces mib'

... surely the whole point of the custom mib tool is that we can all now add mibs for devices as we require.... this was a key componant of v8... are Solarwinds now saying that we can only add mibs for 'supported' devices??

I am now very worried.... I have cancelled support on the product that I use to perform these functions in anticipation that the functionality would be fully available in the new v8 product... I am confused

From what you're describing, you should be able to monitor these devices with the Custom MIB Poller. The "List Resources" function is only used when trying to monitor intefaces, CPU, volumes, etc with the standard Orion poller.

When you use the "File", "Custom MIB Pollers" option, are you able to define and assign a Custom MIB Poller for these devices?

No I am not... all my other devices appear in the list to assign the custom pollers too except the ones that display this problem when adding to the system manager tool... they are just not in the list of devices to add custom mibs to

Any ideas?.. I am running the latest beta downloaded at the beginning of this week

Maybe I'm a bit dense, but once I've assigned a custom MIB poller to a node, where do I see it, or how do I use it?

If you customize your view for that device there are several new options of charts you can add to display custom poller data, and there's also a custom poller status that will show the current values for all custom pollers on that device. (That was handy for troubleshooting)

All of these charts have the option to hide them if there is no custom poller assigned to the device, so you can add these charts to your general device views without adding a lot of clutter to your devices that don't have the custom pollers assigned to them.

Martin If I recall correctly I needed to be able to establish a basic snmp connection to the host resources mib in the system manager before I could see a device in the custom mib poller. I think you need to monitor something in the list resources area before you can see them in custome mib poller area.

Also as far as you statement that you can't get some data but it does return a sucessfull test with the proper value I'm also having this issue. It's only with "Get" statements not "Get Next." But it sounds like most others aren't so it's probably an environmentally specific bug more than anything else. And the development team is working on it.

Once that bug is fixed I'll be reasonalby pleased with this first go at custom mibs. I agree that the interface to assign custom mibs is very painfull and I would REALLY like to see a way to export them once I've made them so I can move them to my production system when this goes live. But more than that it would be nice for us to share those customizations here quickly rather than making new users do it all manually. So If I have the custom mibs all maped out for APC UPSs I could just post them and some else could just import them. What's the point of an import button with no export button?

Once everything in the beta is worked out this is really going to add a lot of functionallity for us as far as temperature monitoring, monitoring power draw ourt of UPSs and powerstrips. tracking vpn utilizations between sites. And the list of things we can now use the alert manager for just exploded.

One more feature I'd like to see comming down the line is being able to report the status of custom mibs in the alerts. Like what the temperature is what the input status is on a UPS things like that.

Actually there are a couple of tips I'd like to share to make the custom mib poller tool a bit less painful.

I've noticed it's much slower if you have a lot of nodes in your system manager. If you're setting up a new system try setting up your custom mibs early in the process before doing a full discovery and adding all you’re other nodes.

Also if you're adding multiple custom mibs to a device copy the OID to the clipboard and then paste it in the OID: field when you create the next one this will take you much more quickly to the spot in the hierarchy you want to be as opposed to scrolling down.

And for those new to the custom mib poller most of the custom mibs you want will be under 1.3.6.1.4.1 jump to there and find the company of the product you're trying to configure.

Ahhh. I thought I would get new entries on the Net Perf Mon entry... So you're saying the only place to view the new data is on the webpage?

yes you need to look at it thought the webpage. Which means you need to modify some views and add some custom poller charts and tables. the custom poller status is probably the most helpful one to add first as it will list each of your custom pollers and what their value is in a basic table form.

How do you add tables. I have been able to add charts and gauges but not tables to me web pages.

And Has anyone be able to add Cisco QoS Class Based MIBs to work correctly? I have listed the OID below that I'm trying to pull information on my WAN routers to see the class of services.

I am trying to add a device, but it uses its own MIB. It is also v1 instead of v2c. I know the OID that I must use, and I can get the data using command line in linux, but I don't know how to get the MIB into Orion? Anyone know how to do this? Where do I set up the community string for the new custom poller? Thank you very much!!

I just read my post and it doesn't make much sense, so let me clarify.

I can reach the device, but when I type in the OID I get the error, "The OID is not supported". Does this mean I have to send in the MIB to Orion and wait 4 months until it gets added, or is there some way I can add it myself.

I thought that we were goin to be able to add the MIBs ourself, so that we no longer had to wait. That was the big draw of the product upgrade (no?)

The error message "This OID is not supported" does not mean that you have to send it in so that SolarWinds can implement support. It means that the polling service was not able to reconsile that OID with that device. The 8.0.0 version of the custom poller had an issue where the poller would make a valid request of a device, get a valid response back, decided that the confidence was too low and report that error and throw the response out when it shouldn't have. This issue was fixed in 8.0.1.

The custom poller will use the same community string used by the orion standard poller.

As for returning "The OID is not supported", are you seeing this when you create the custom poller (during the Test of the poller)? If so, is the Test dialog showing the same OID that you entered in the OID field? Are you using SNMP Get Next or Get?
