Application Server DR Plan

I am working on a DR plan for my Orion application server which currently runs NPM and APM and will soon include IPAM.

If my understanding is correct, all of the data is stored in the database (which is a separate server) with the exception of reports which are stored on the file system. Assuming this is correct my DR plan for a totally destroyed Orion app server should be as follows...

Install clean Windows OS
Install Orion (NPM & APM) applications
Connect to existing Database
Restore Reports from backup system

I would like to get confirmation that this is an accurate assumption.

Byron, yes, that is exactly what you need to do. With anything, I suggest performing a dry run to make sure it works as you expect. If you completely lose your server, you will also need to call in to Customer Service to reset your license so your new install isn't running in eval mode. If you still have access and it has Internet access you can park your license with the license tool (but I'm assuming you wouldn't in this scenario).

Also, I assume you will have network access to all of the devices. Some customers lock SNMP polling down to specific machines so you'll want to make sure your DR server has access. Also, traps and syslog messages will still go to the old IP. This may not be a problem in your environment, it really depends on how your network and DR plan is setup.

Yes, we are actually licensed for it and I am thinking of dropping it from maintenance. After all I have read about it I am not sure the extra complexity and expense that it adds to the environment is worth it. With the DR plan mentioned above it would only take me a few hours to get a new system up and running in a virtual environment.

I would also recommend you backup and restore the APM & SSL certificates. When you restore the APM certificate, you won't have to re-enter APM credentials on your new server build.

Good point, do you know where those certificates are stored so I can verify they are being backed up?

Is it still necessary to do a special backup of the Web configuration using the tool?
