What does 'Node Status Warning' really mean?

I see lots of posts about various node statuses (statii?) but none with basic definitions. Now this may be a dumb question to most, but just what do these mean? I mean, 'Up' & 'Down' are no-brainers, but just what does 'Node Status Warning' *really* mean?

I frequently get 'Node Status Warning' on various servers followed within minutes with 'Node Status Up', but the servers never go down. Just what triggers this apparently false alarm? I guess I can change my alerts to be triggered by 'if status is down' instead of 'if status is not up', but that just seems wrong...

When you go into Polling Settings via the web interface there is a setting at the bottom "Node Warning Level" and an associated time frame in seconds. This dictates how long (based on ping failures) NPM will wait before marking a Node as down. I believe the interval in between (first NPM ping fails but the time frame for marking the node as down has not been reached) will mark the nodes status as "Warning".

The alert log should tell you what type of alert is causing the warning.

Thank for the reply, but still not getting it.

Can you tell me what you mean by alert log? I went to what I think of when I think 'alert log' but did not find the entries that correspond to the alerts (emails) I received.

In the Orion console, I went to Alert -> Advance Alerts (all of my alerts are advanced - no basic alerts). There are some alerts here, but not the 'Node Status Warning' I am looking for. That node (a Windows server in this case) is not listed for any alerts.

Are you referring to a different log?

The best way to see what is going on, and change it so that the message is not vague is to go into Advanced Alert Manager from Start -> All Programs -> SolarWinds Orion -> Alerting, Reporting and Mapping. Click on configure alerts and you will see a list of you alerts. The ones checked are active. Look through those and find one that sending an alert on warning or critical. Edit that alert and look in the Trigger Actions area. Here is where you can see if that alert is sending you email. To make sure the email you receive clearly describes the alert use the Advanced Alert variables in the Admin Guide.

No, your reply doesn't really help, Andy.

I know which alert is being triggered. What I don't know is what causes Orion to believe that a node's status is 'Unknown'. In other words, what condition would the Windows Server have to be in for Orion to interpret it as 'Unknown'? A Windows server can be powered on & running, or powered off, or running poorly, but I've never seen one as being 'unknown'. How would I recognize that status on the server?

Okay, I now understand that I get the status "Warning" when there is a high packet loss rate and that I can change the time interval for this. What if I get the status "Warning" message instead of "Down" when I know the node is down? For example if I shutdown a switch or a server and I get an email saying that the node status is Warning, and then when I turn it on I get a message saying it is Up.

I have the alert set to email me when the node status is not equal to down, and it used to work fine at the beginning. The problem also doesnt happen with all nodes.
