Alerting on volume by size

Hello All,

I currently have a system where alerts are sent out if the free space of a volume is < 5% Instead of having that threshold applied to all of the servers I am monitoring, is there a way to change the threshold dyynamically based on the size of the volume. For example, I would like volumes with an overall capacity of < 100GB to fire off the alert if <= 30% available. While a server whos volume is 4TB fire off at 10% I would also like a daily report sent to me that will list the volume name, capacity, % free. I am new to SW coming from Idera / Red-Gate shops, I am not sure where I would go or how i would create this type of alert. I can write the T-SQL code to do it, but that is about it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You could do this in one alert as follows:

I added in a middle category to cover all volume sizes.

Another option would be to create a volume custom property for the alert threshold and use that in the alert:

There are three options I'm familiar with.

1. One is to use the built-in reports based on amount of time until the disk fills up. This works great for volumes on file servers or the like, where data growth is fairly constant. These monitor the "Volume Capacity Forecasting" property. In development environments or other places where data growth can be in chunks, not as useful.

2. Set up alerts based on size of volume. In other words, volumes 1-2TB alert on one percentage, and volumes 100-500GB alert on another percentage.

3. Set up alerts based on type of server. your Exchange servers alert on percentage, and your image deployment server alerts on free space.

As for daily reports, that's built in already. Go into Manage Reports and search for "volume", there are several to choose from. You probably want the "Disks approaching 100% capacity this month" report. You can easily edit it (or preferably duplicate and edit it) for the previous day.

blsanner thank you much, this is indeed what i was looking for. I do have a second question to kind of expand on this a little bit. if i do not want to use the condition builder GUI is there some way I can directly write the SQL code to create these conditions. Also does the volume size compairison operation recognize scientific notation. if my second alert is for a volume with a capacity > 1 GB < 100 GB which is my next threshold can i use volume size > 1073741824 bytes AND volume size <= 1e+11? it is going to get very tedious typing out in bytes thresholds for 1, 2, 5, 10, 15 TB volumes lol.

john.trumbul, yes, you can certainly do that. On the Trigger Condition tab, in the drop down where you select what type of object you want to alert on, there are options at the very bottom of the list for custom SQL/SWQL queries
