Node to node network latency/utilization/load

Hey everyone, I apologize if this is logged incorrectly.

What I'm trying to do is monitor the latency and/or utilization/load of links between 2 nodes,

For example, I have NodeA and NodeB which are both in the same site but on different VLANS and Hardware. The hardware they both sit on connect back to the same switch, which is monitored with SolarWinds.

I want to create a map which shows both those nodes, the switch in between them and the traffic between those nodes via the switch.

Is this something thats possible?

Can you clarify - are the nodes you are looking to see connected a couple of servers? Is the goal to see server to server communication with the network path between them?

yeah 2 servers that are currently monitored as nodes. I want to see the utilization between NODE-A <> Interface <> switch <> firewall <> switch <> interface <> NODE-B for example. In such a way that I can put it into an orion map.

Install agents on both, enable packet inspection, use the application->application UI elements and something separate for the switch.

Option 3)

Possibly the next-gen mapping takes care of it?

Something clever with SWQL for the data and a custom HTML element to graph it

Option 5)

Stick a few bandwidth-monitoring elements next to each other on a summary dashboard

Option 6)

Install agents on both, run netpath probes from each server to the other

Stick a few resources together in Perfstack

Depending on where your Orion server is located with regards to the 2 nodes, NetPath might also be an option. You'd have to build a path from your Orion server to each node. This won't provide node2node data, but it may still provide the visibility you are looking for.

Netpath would work directly node to node if you install the netpath agent on the nodes.

I agree with the options that have been proposed by other members. In the new Orion Maps, we can show you the server communication as long as those systems are running the agent. If those servers are physical, and being monitored via SNMP you could likely see topology data, otherwise that information is not being captured. You could create a dependency which would signify the relationship, but we wouldn't be able to automatically display network traffic between the switch and the server. I am working on giving you a way to do this in a future release regardless of how each endpoint is being monitored. For now, here is a crude mock up of what that might look like in your environment. You could add the interfaces from the servers, and even Netpath Service entities as well if desired. Otherwise Network Atlas would be another option.

This could be a widget on a dashboard along side other widgets such as PerfStack charts as an example.

yeah we looked at netpath, but i ideally want something i can put on a noc view and leave there, NetPath only lets me have 20 monitors aswell

20 per location - You can have plenty more if you have agent installs on other boxes. That said dont go crazy rolling out hundreds if you've got any issues with database size or usage

having a look into this just now. is there any valuable documentation you can provide that i can read up on Orion Maps? I don't seem to be able to get some of the stats shown in the above image so i'm wondering if i'm missing some settings/features

~20 monitors per system where you install the agent. You can install it on any windows computer and run as many as you want.

Another option is install VNQM and run a test between switches if you are using Cisco.
