Orion Network Performance Monitor 8.1 is now available

Orion Network Performance Monitor 8.1 is now available for download from the SolarWinds' customer portal.

How do customers upgrade Orion 8.1?

We will officially support upgrades from Orion 7.8.5, 8.0.0, 8.0.1, or Orion 8.0.2.
There is no need to uninstall before installing 8.1. The installer will do it for you.
All data will be migrated
NOTE: Because of database changes required to improve performance, the database update may take longer than in previous upgrades. For larger database, this update could take more than an hour.
Customers with extra pollers, extra web servers, or the hot standby engine must upgrade those components to 8.1 as well

Are there updates to the modules?

All of the modules must be upgraded to work with Orion 8.1. Updated versions of the new modules are also available.

Until you upgrade your modules, your website will not look right. Upgrade everything.

What's New in Orion 8.1?

Added support for Windows Server 2003 (64-bit)

Orion now provides support for the 64-bit version of the Windows Server 2003 operating system.

Provides Audible Alerts from the Orion Web Console

The Orion web console can now produce audible alerts when events occur while browing the website.

Multiple performance and stability enhancements

This version of Orion NPM includes several enhancements providing improved performance and stability.

Improved Database Maintenance

Several enhancements have been made to improve database maintenance performance.

Allows the Test Firing of Advanced Alerts

Advanced alert actions can now be tested before they are triggered.

Only SNMP Enabled Nodes are Shown During Custom Poller Assignments

When assigning nodes to Custom Pollers, only SNMP enabled nodes will appear in the list.

Negative Values Can Now be Charted When Received by Custom Pollers

Charts can now display negative values that are collected by custom pollers.

Added the Ability to Import and Export Custom MIB Pollers

Provides the ability to import or export the custom MIB pollers that you create for use with other Orion NPM implementations. A user forum with a customer-generated custom poller repository exists and is available at Thwack.com

This version of Orion NPM provides the following three example Custom MIB Poller files:

Offers a fully functional Advanced Alert Engine in the Orion evaluation version.
Provides an SLX version of Orion for evaluation.
Reverifies the SNMP version on each rediscovery.
Migrates Reports and Maps automatically during 7.8.5 upgrade to 8.1.
Corrects licensing issues with the Hot Standby Engine web site.
Resolves an issue with the Custom Poller UI causing System Manager to stop responding in very large environments.
Corrects Web Console SQL Errors.
Documents how to adjust interface transfer rates in the Administrator Guide.
Grants accounts rights automatically to NetFlow Traffic Analyzer views.

- Time of Day will now enable and suppress alerts appropriately.
- From/To fields in email actions behave as expected.

- Alerts now trigger reliably, regardless of the naming convention used for nodes and interfaces.
- Auto-refresh no longer collapses alert groups.
- No longer possible to switch from one alert type to another (for example, changing Node to Volume) leaving an inappropriate trigger condition.
- Pressing Enter in text boxes is no longer treated as clicking OK.
- Pressing Enter while editing a trigger condition no longer closes the wizard.

After upgrading to 8.1, our web interface is messed up. Is there something that needs to be done to get it looking right again?

It seems as though the style sheet is messed up. All the fonts are Times New Roman and the information tables have no backgrounds.

EDIT: I've tried on different computers, different browsers, cleared cache, etc.

Do have to backup of all of my advance alerts, reports, and report scheduler jobs?

Upgrade was smooth and painless for me (approx 4000 nodes over three pollers).

Didn't need to backup alerts, reports etc.

I also needed to install Application Monitor, Netflow and Additional Web Server - all OK. Small issue outstanding with Netflow but this pre-existed 8.1 (talking with Support regarding this one).

I wouldn't normally be so quick with the install of a new version - but had other pressing needs...

Thanks for the update. I do have one question. By any chance has the issue of the advanced alerts macros being available been addressed in this version? If not when? Almost all of our alerts are still basic because the alert variables do not work in the advance alert engine.

What module upgrades? I don't have any additional modules and all I see in the Customer Area is Orion 8.1.

If your running your webserver on port 8080 (like I was) You need to call Support and change the web page to port 80, then manually change all custom views and custom links...

Just my 15 hour experience... Other than that 8.1 is looking pretty darn GOOD

Have not had a chance to upgrade to 8.1 as of yet- we're going to build a x64 server for this now that it is supported.

One question- now that Orion supports 8.1, has the Event Forwarder been updated as well? I looked through our customer portal, but it appears to be the same Orion Event Forwarder. Is there any chance of getting that compatible with x64 servers as well??

I force SSL use (port 443) on the Orion website, and I'm having a similar problem with viewing the website. I don't have any add on packs, but the background colors don't show up, and as a result, the website is difficult to understand. I turned off the requirement to force SSL 128 bit encryption, and the site showed up fine. However, I have to use SSL, and after turning the option back on, the website was back to looking wierd.

If anybody has any ideas, please advise. Thanks

We have a bug in the web site. It will only use Port 80. We are working on a hotfix, but in the meantime, reconfiguring your website to use Port 80 should fix your issue.

We have just upgraded to Orion 8.1 and experienced the same problem, here is the solution that seems to fix the https issue, i have passed this on to Tech support for there review.

browse to the Inetpub\solarwinds\NetPerfMon\Scripts directory and make a copy of the NetPerfMon.asp file

then Edit the following section

...but I still receive an error when Notepager Pro tries to send out a message. It fails because it does not append the FROM field to the front of the domain ex. @domain.com

You must have something strange going on. I can't tell from the information you provide here what may be going on. What do you mean "unable to capture the SNMP packet"? Is this when you are trying to add the servers to Orion?
