Modify node Caption field with SQL: changes undone

We have about 16000 new nodes in our nodes table that have IP addresses in a pattern that, combined with a lookup, lets me put a caption to the node, something better than the IP address. So, I wrote a script to do that: does SQL updates on the node table. I ran it, and it worked great: new captions everywhere. Until they started disappearing, returning to the original IP address.

However, if we change a caption by hand in the GUI, it stays changed.

So, where's the old caption coming from, and how do I stop it from being pushed back into the caption field?

Stop the NetPerfMon Service, make your changes to the database and then restart the service.
The NetPerfMon Service builds an in memory model of the network.
