IIS daily restart
frattafr
At least once a day we have to restart IIS service.
Is there any workaround?
Our config : application server : w2k SP3 + Orion 6.3
separate database server : w2k sp3 + SQL Server

What version is your SQL server?
Upgrade to Orion 6.4 baby. It is easy and it takes care of some of the performance issues inherent in the 6.3 web interface.

I have upgraded this weekend to 6.4 and we still have the same problem.
After a while maps are not dispayed and we have to restart IIS to fix the problem.

We are having the exact same problem. The charts won't display for one user, but other users are working fine. A restart of IIS fixes it, but it comes back after a couple of hours. Sometimes the website will come back "Page cannot be displayed". It has gotten to the point where it is almost unusable.

We have the same problem and it's a real hassle I can tell you. You can click around and pretty soon the web interface seems to stop responding :-(.

Unfortunatelly , I have the same problem, At least once a day we have to restart IIS . It is definitely problem with asp written by solarwinds programmers. I hope they will find any solution .

When you installed Orion, did you create the website in the default location (C:\INetPub\Solarwinds)? I had a problem when accessing the Node Details page, but re-creating the website in the default location fixed it.

Hi Guys.. we had the same problem and it has to do with your permissions. Check to see if you have a GPO that is changing the settings. You must have read write and execute for:
program files\Solar Winds and
inetpub\wwwroot\Solar Winds

I have went through all permissions and everything looks fine. I notice that when opening the web page I will get error 500 internal server error. After refreshing the page over and over, sometimes up to 10 times, the page will then display and I can log in. Other times I will get to the login page, but when I click on login it gives me error 500. You don't have to necessarily restart IIS, if you just keep playing around with it, closing your browser, refreshing, logging in as a different user, it starts working again for a while.

All of your symptoms are slightly different so I don't think you have the same problem. If you're getting page can not be displayed or internal server error 500, inside the IE, click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced. Under the browing section, turn off "Show friendly HTTP errors". This will give you a more detailed error message. Post the detailed error message and I will try to help you.

I do neither get a red cross nor an "error 500". "Show friendly HTTP errors" is switched on. The map on my top 10 page is displayed as a white rectangle and the browser is loading forever. The web interface then is not responding anymore. I can even not logout. Restarting the browser does not help. I have to restart the w3svc service. Stopping the service takes quit long too.
Sometimes I get a red cross when starting the web interface for the first time. Then I press F5 for refresh and the map comes up.
I also noticed that the system logs me off after an hour or so and refreshing does not work. However, I have set the timeout to the maximum of 1440 minutes.
Not using maps does not solve the problem since it happens with charts on the node details page as well. Sometimes I get one of my maps instead of a min/max/average response time chart. This usually happens to all charts of a node details page.
I have tried to install the web pages to C:\InetPub\SolarWinds. This did not help. I have also given the anonymous account modify permissions for the web pages and the program folder. Did not help either.
I can see all my charts in the SolarWinds System Manager. So it's obviously not a problem of the database or the NPM. Just displaying the data on the web is not working well.
I have sent a message like this to the SolarWinds tech support. Will let you know in case they have a solution.

Dirk

It could be permissions. With Windows it's almost impossible to track down. But there is an easy way to test to see if it's permissions. Open up the IIS Manager and right click on the website and select properties. Then, pick the Directory Security tab. Click the top Edit button, then click Edit to modify the account. Change the account to the local Administrator for the machine. Restart IIS. This will cause all web users to access the website as the admin. You don't want to leave it that way, but atleast it will tell you if it's permissions.

Now I am able to re-produce the problem. I have two users Admin and Guest. Both have no password. Admin has the default home page. Guest has the top ten home page which includes the map. When logging on as Admin, I get the home page and then click on top ten. Now I have my map as a red cross. Refreshing the pages shows the map.
I log off now and logon as Guest. It goes straight to the top ten page and the map is a white box only. The browser is more or less frozen and I can not use the web interface anymore. Restarting the W3SVC service on the server solves the problem.
I did some further testing and finaly found a solution that seems to work for me. Right click on Web Sites in the IIS manager. Open the service tab and check "Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode". This is available on Windows Server 2003 only. I can run the web interface fine. I don't even need to install the web site at the default folder C:\InetPub\SolarWinds. It's on G:\Internet\SolarWinds on my box.
Before making the switch to the IIS 5.0 isolation mode, I also played with different identities for the default application pool. Even setting the identity to Local System did not make it run.

Before people having the same trouble I had switch to Windows Server 2003, here is what SolarWinds support says after I sent my solution to them.
Orion NPM is not supported on Windows 2003. Aside from the known website issue, there are also issues with SNMP polling. They recommend using Windows 2000 SP4.

Vieregg,
You are most likely running out of memory, for both SQL & IIS.
Check the memory used by these processes using task manager.
Check the on-line server sizing doc - <www.solarwinds.net/.../Scalability_Options.htm

Hi, I do not think it is a memory problem. I have 2GB memory on both machines. one machine runs NPM and IIS, another runs mssql only. Both are equipped with 2x1.8Ghz. I had to set restarting IIS every 5 hours to avoid problems like this :
Server object error 'ASP 0177 : 8007000e'
Server.CreateObject Failed
/NetPerfMon/scripts/NetPerfMon.asp, line 19
Ran out of memory

I wonder if solarwinds asp programmers are reading this forum ?
