Is there already an alert for this that i might have missed?
There are alerts for Interface utilization but I would recommend identifying bottle neck areas, and using a custom property such as Interface_Type. A common place to look for bottle neck are Trunk, and WAN interfaces.
1. Create Custom Property Called Interface_type
2. Identify all interfaces on your network that connect your switches/routers, mark these as Trunk or WAN interfaces Types.
3. Create a new Interface Alert, set the alert to apply to only WAN and Trunk Interface types (be sure to use an Or Statement)
4. For the Condition Search for Interface Utilization percentage or something like that, and set it to equal or greater then 80
5. On the Reset Condition change it to Special, and select copy the Trigger.
6. Change the condition to less than
7. Setup you Trigger and Reset actions.
I have found Custom Properties to be most useful for alerts. For example, you can use criticality on Nodes with Crtical/High/Medium/Low/No Alert - Then set Alerts and Reports based off these, such as only trigger during business hours for Medium and low, and 24/7 for High.
Buy customizing Alerts using custom properties you can limit alert overload. Hope this was helpful.
