Everything OK Alarm

Question

With Hurricane Irene making its way up the eastern coast today, i'm looking to setup an "everythings ok alarm", where an email is sent to me every 15 min to let me know that i can still ping my ISP gateway.

I have notifications set to notify me if something in the network goes down but that won't mean much if the ISP is down. And i fear that if we lose power and the ISP I will not know what the room temperatures are.

Generally you wouldnt want to spam yourself with UP alerts. If the orion server / email server went down, then you wont get the alerts, so I guess thats the situation your looking to consider.

One idea would be to add your core devices to a group, then alert if the overall groups status is UP.

You can set the alert with a 15 min escalation and that would email you as long as that group is up.

So, assuming your on NPM v10.1.x, you can log onto the web console > settings > manage groups > add new group.

Add your core devices in this group.

Now for the alert. In the advanced alert manager. Create a new alert.

On the Trigger Condition tab, the logic you want is:

Trigger when all of the following apply

Group Status is equal to up

Group Name is equal to <select your group name>

Trigger Actions tab:

Add your action to send an email.

On the Alert Escalation tab check the Execute this action repeatedly while the Alert is Triggered. Set this to the desired interval.
