running baseline problems

I am a newbie to Orion NPM so bear with me if my questions are infantile. When I open NPM the system says it is running the baseline process with a button allowing me to skip this process. Unfortunately, the system seems to hang there and never completes the baselining. I can skip this process and the system works just fine. Can anyone tell me what is happening during this process and any ideas as to what is hanging this up.
