After minutes of no connectivity, polling stopped completely

Yesterday we did some network maintenance that cut our Orion NPM server off from the rest of the world for approximately 12 minutes. This morning I realized that upon reconnection the system didn't resume polling and didn't bother mentioning anything about it (or at least that is what it looks like). When I looked at any given device it "looked" like it was polling them as the gauges had values but when I went to look at the historical data it had stopped when connectivity had been lost.

As an odd side note, there were a few devices where polling stuff via the UnDP continued without a problem but all of the other stuff such as CPU, Mem, etc had stopped.

Restarting all of the Orion services seemed to resolve the issue.

Is this expected behavior?

Is it possible the Orion server was disconnected from the SQL server database during this maintenance period? I only ask because I've encountered the same issue when my Orion server was unable to connect to the SQL server servicing the Orion DB for a period of time. I'm sure this isn't expected behavior. I would assume that proper handling of that scenario would be to continually retry connecting to the DB and resume polling once the DB was available again. Based on my limited observation this isn't what's happening and might be the cause for your missing historical data.

Yeah, I have seen the behavior you mention as well.

Further investigation of this problem has revealed that it wasn't at the time of our network maintenance as originally suspected. It was in the middle of the night when (as best I can tell) nothing unusual was going on.

I have also experienced this as well. I am running on Server 2008 64 bit & SQL 2005. I have to reboot the server before polling will work again after many devices stop responding. I have not opened a ticket yet.
