Cisco Modules

Can Solarwinds alert me if a module in a switch [Catalyst 5500] either goes down or if it is removed.

I have had a look at the alerting options and cannot find options to alert against modules going up/down.

Any ideas?

Orion will not do this without Custom Mibs.
You could do this with a syslogging utility, &/or SNMP trap receiver.

The new Syslog Services that comes with the Orion 7.7 will let you build alerts and actions which could page or email.
