Dependencies

Is there any clean and simple way to have dependencies set on alerts so I don't get flooded with emails when upstream router goes down?

Use the "Alert Suppression" tab when defining an alert. You can define conditions here that prevent the alert from triggering.

I have gotten the Alert Suppression to work, the problem I have is that even though the alerts are suppressed their resets are not. Is this by design?

Creating alert suppression conditions on already-triggered alerts will not reset those alerts; does this answer your question?

I guess what I'm looking for is a way to have hierarchical alert suppression for multiple remote sites, without having to create a separate alert for each site. Something along the lines as a generic rule of ‘if remote router is down, supress the alert on the remote switch’.

I understand your use case; however, this would require the Orion Alerting Engine to have knowledge of your network's topology. Orion would need to know that your remote router, if down, would also make your remote switch appear down because it is unreachable. This type of functionality is not avaliable in Orion at this time; the best approach is to set up individual alerts for each of your sites.
