Good morning, I tried to poll an interface bandwidth more frequently (60 seconds, with stats collected every 2 mins), but NPM shows the data at 15 mins steps (even if I set the graph to 1 min). Interface polling more frequent

Good morning,

I tried to poll an interface bandwidth more frequently (60 seconds, with stats collected every 2 mins), but NPM shows the data at 15 mins steps (even if I set the graph to 1 min).

I suspect performances issue on the engine. Here below some infos, do you have any ideas?

Yes, it does. I opened a case and the support, they confirmed that the number of elements is too high; we lowered also the poll/sec rate (205 -> 61).

I also increased the default polling frequency from 120 sec to 180; unfortunately we got no dramatic changes ... I'll keep you posted

I think you may need to configure the remote device and set the statistics interval to match NPM. If the device only rolls up and presents stats every 15 min, this is what you will get. you can also check the "raw data" if you click on the graph to verify what data the device is returning to you.

Another thing to consider is the rollup.

Hello Larry,

the remote device is a Cisco router ... the bandwidth graph should be obtained reading a MIB about byte tx/rx and doing the math. The frequency depends on the engine, it's not driven by Cisco.

I don't think there is a command on Cisco to set this behaviour and the interface has a load interval of 30 seconds.

Raw datas are usuallly collected every 15 mins, sometimes 20 mins and the max is 35 mins

Hi Marco74,

I am not aware of any setting required on the responding side either. As far as I know, MIB refresh on the Cisco side, withing the agent, is close to real-time. If you SNMP poll every 5 secs, you'll have refreshed data every 5 sec.

Back to your question, I don't see any other explanation to the fact that you don't see your expected data granularity (2 min), other than a poller overloaded, or close to be.

You have 9,000+ elements on this poller, this is pretty much was we consider the maximum (eventhough we see instances of pollers going above, because this is not an exact science and so many parameters have an influence).

Knowing that you try to set some (all?) interface polling at 2 min, I think that this is your problem. It is a typical behavior of a loaded poller, to not honor the required polling frequency, but work on a best effort basis (in this case 15min seems to be the best it can do).

All that is without looking at your Diagnostics and I'm not in support. You can open a case for more certainty.
