monitoring solar winds

I am looking for ideas on how to monitor our solar winds environment. We are looking to monitor the following layers in order to avoid Solar Wind outages:

Node/SNMP/Disk Utilization

Server

Web Server

Pollers

Database

Network Interfaces for Machines

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A good number of our users use an APM stand-alone server to monitor NPM and other critical applications.

APM has application templates specific to monitoring NPM, SQL and dozens of other apps.

Thanks for your reply. An APM standalone server would use the same DB back-end as my existing Solar Winds environment? If so would alerts (ex. emails/pages) be generated if that backend db server were to go down?

An APM standalone can use the same db server as your existing SolarWinds environment if and only if the standalone APM server is using a separate instance on that server. In this scenario, you would not be able to generate alert actions in the event of a db server failure.

If you want to be able to monitor the state of the db server for your SW environment, you need to put the dbs of both your standalone APM installation and your existing SolarWinds installation on separate servers. Each could be monitoring the other in this case.

So is the only solution to this to buy another copy of APM? Why doesn't Solarwinds provide something that keeps an eye on the server and database connection? We lost connection to our database and didn't get any notifications when another server went down. Supports suggestion was also to send them more money. So with this suggestion we would not only have to buy another copy of APM we would also have to buy another copy of SQL?
