Proactive interface monitoring.

I recently put Orion in place for my network data\device monitoring software. As I am new to this company the majority of people are impressed as to what Orion can do, especially when compared in price to other system. This is leading to my question. So far anytime someone asks me "so can Orion do that" because X software can. I have come on to a bump that I can not find an answer to, so here it is.

Is it possible for Orion to do predictive or proactive polling? Is there some way to set up an alert that would tell me that a interface maybe flaking out? I am unsure as to what the threshold standards may be for the interfaces of a "Cisco" devices that may lead to investigating a port. I have an alert configured that I am testing but if someone else has something that I can user or test on my own please reply.

By the way to the Dev, Support and everyone at Solarwind's this product is great!!! You guys have done an amazing job. Just so you know you are kicking "EMC Smarts" bottom at every turn here.

Sean,

Depending on what aspects of an interface you want to be proactive on there are various counters that can be used. Besides the normal traffic statistics, Orion also collect Error and Discard information on interfaces. You can setup alerts on these properties to alert you when they cross a threshold number of your choosing. Along with the normal data collection aspects of Orion you could also use the Trap and Syslog collection services to alert you as well. Hope this gives you some avenues to investigate.

This is helpful and I have been refered to contact the device provider per SW support. I was just checking to see if anyone has found some standards that worked? To me this is a hard Alert to config as I dont have a port that I know is in the declining state.

I appreciate your advice.
