Best system for Orion

Hi,

We are currently looking at investing in Orion NPM and the Netflow and Configuration manager modules.

We can also afford as big and beefy a server(s) as is required. I have read the minimum system requirements but what have other people gone with? 32 or 64 bit Windows? Separate App and SQL servers? Any information greatly appreciated.

The answer to most of your questions is "it depends". There are some rules of thumb, such as the "fact" that a single polling engine server will typically handle the monitoring of 8000 to 10000 "elements".

To accurately answer your question, you need to consider the following:

(1) How many nodes, interfaces (of any variety) and volumes (drives, arrays, SAN, etc.)  will you need to monitor?

(2) Will you need to collect NetFlow or syslog data? Yes to either or both of these will significantly increase the demand on resources. Monitoring either of these alone will require that the SQL be in a separate server.

(3) Will there be any other applications residing on the polling server?

(4) Will ther be any other databases on the DB server?

 

These are a few of the more critical questions that should be considered in order to answer your basic question. I would say that regardless of the size network that you want to monitor, you can expect to need at least two servers for SolarWinds applications.
