Solarwinds migration activity this weekend please give suggestions

I have done the migration 5 times, I have prepared my own SOP as per our environment, I suggest you to migrate Database first and then application on another day

Database migration:-

1. Stop Orion services

2. Take compressed DB backup

3. Copy the backup file on new DB server and restore it, same credentials should be created on new server as on old one

4. Run configuration wizard on old application server, select Database, enter the FQDN/IP address of the new server and complete the wizard

5. Start the Orion services

Application migration:-

1. Be sure you have allowed the new IP address on all the network devices access list, SNMP access list, Linux servers IP tables, if you are using NTA then configure the new IP address for receiving NTA in L3 devices

2. Add solarwinds folders in Antivirus exclusion, it will be best if we stop Antivirus or any other agent on the server during installation

Above one is a normal and simple approach

But if you are not sure whether the new Application server IP address is allowed on all devices or not then follow below process

In our case we have taken new application and DB server with new IP address and hostname, installed 30 days trial, copied old DB to new one, disabled all the alerts.

This means that we had setup a parallel setup, we allowed all the devices in our INFRA to be polled for 20 mins, during this time we checked all the modules where servers/application/netflow was not working then we unmanaged all the devices

We did the required changes like allowing/configuring new IP address where required and again managed all the nodes for 20 mins and repeat the process until everything was working fine as same as current setup

Note:- For 20 minutes all the devices will be polled twice, one by old server and one by new server

Then we dropped the copied Database on new server and followed the Database migration process

After one week we deactivated the license, ran configuration wizard on new server, post completion of configuration wizard we updated the polling engine ID at multiple places through database manager

UPDATE Engines SET ServerName = @newHostname WHERE ServerName = @oldHostname

UPDATE WebSettings SET SettingValue = @newHostname WHERE SettingName = 'JobSchedulerHost'

UPDATE Websites SET ServerName = @newHostname WHERE ServerName = @oldHostname

UPDATE OrionServers SET HostName = @newHostname WHERE HostName = @oldHostnam

Goto Engines table and note the new engine and old engine ID
SELECT TOP 1000 * FROM [dbo].[Websites]
SELECT TOP 1000 * FROM [dbo].[SRM_Providers]
SELECT TOP 1000 * FROM [dbo].[SRM_StorageArrays]
SELECT TOP 1000 * FROM [dbo].[IPAM_Engine]
Goto Nodesdata table and replace the engine ID
SELECT TOP 1000 * FROM [dbo].[SRM_Providers]
Check IPAM subnet polling

UPDATE [dbo].[IPAM_Group]

SET EngineID = 'number'

UPDATE dbo.Settings SET CurrentValue = 1 WHERE SettingID LIKE 'dbm-defragmentation-enabled%'

delete from dbo.ContainerMemberSnapshots

delete from dbo.PendingNotifications

delete from dbo.SubscriptionTags

delete from dbo.Subscriptions

Thanks for update. we have successfully migrated the solarwinds orion servers. but we are facing some issue. some reports are missing from report writer.

like monthly disk volumes and down nodes..etc reports. can you tell me how to come back the reports new orion console.

The first step in the "Migrate your product to the new server" section of the migration guide is to backup your legacy report writer files. If this was not done you will need to retrieve them from backups of your old system.

Otherwise, you will need to rebuild these reports in the new report engine.

Dear Support,

Our old platform is composed by: NPM, 10.7, NTA 4.0.2 and NCM 7.2.2.
For the new platform, we started by the SQL Server installation (SQL-server 2019) and then we installed NPM in another server (Solarwinds-Orion-NPM-2020.2.4-OfflineInstaller) when the NPM installation finished and it’s connected to the SQL server, we installed NTA (Solarwinds-Orion-NTA-2020.2.4-OfflineInstaller) and NCM (Solarwinds-Orion-NCM-2020.2.4-OfflineInstaller).
So we wanna know if you can assist us to migrate old data from:
- NPM 10.7 to Solarwinds-Orion-NPM-2020.2.4
- NTA 4.0.2 to Solarwinds-Orion-NTA -2020.2.4
- NCM 7.2.2 to Solarwinds-Orion- NCM-2020.2.4
And how we can proceed ?

As a solution we need to do this steps:

- Backup the old database
- restore the old one to the new Server

- Rename the newly created Orion database
- Perform adjustments step 8 of “Migrate Solarwinds Orion Products to a new server with a new IP or hostname”
- Run the Configuration Wizard again, pointing to the imported database to upgrade it to the latest Orion version.

PS: the old server still in production.

But we still get some issues when we upgrade the imported database from the old server to the latest Orion version, the Configuration Wizard seems to be hanging without completing.

Maybe we need more assistance from you. Alternatively, we can give you access via TeamViewer or anydesk to connect remotely to my computer.
