Setting up SNMP on vSphere 4

To what I can see I have followed the instructions here

However when I run the final command: "snmpwalk -v1 -c cstring localhost .1.3.6.1.4.1.6876 | grep 6876.1"

I receive a response "timeout: no response from localhost"

any thoughts on this?

(I do have NPM 10 loaded)

Hi SOcchiogrosso -

These might be obvious, like a DNS resolution error, but let's check them first nonetheless.

1) See if you can successfully run the command "ping localhost".

2) run the command "hostname". Replace "localhost" with what is returned by the command. For example,

$ hostname

foo.local

Then alter the snmpwalk command to be:

$ snmpwalk -v1 -c cstring foo.local .1.3.6.1.4.1.6876 | grep 6876.1

I can successfully ping the localhost, I can also ping the hostname of the device, how the snmpwalk command still times out.

I did run the command "esxcfg-firewall -e snmpd" but it still looks like something is blocking the snmp traffic

I also did a show firewall status and I see the Opened ports.

hostdsnmp for both port 161 and 171, UDP in and Out.

Do you happen to have an example as to what you put in your snmp.xml file?

I recently installed NPM 10 RC and everything works great, just want to enable snmp as well as the API queries.

In my snmp.xml file file I have the following:

<enable>true</enable><port>171</port><communities>PSOVM</communities>

<targets>127.0.01@162/PSOVM</targets></snmpSettings></config>

I had to add the whole "<port>171</port>" since it was not initially in my snmp.xml file. Maybe I did not put it in the correct spot?

All of it shows up in 1 line the snmp.xml file, I just broke it into 3 lines in the post so it's easier to read.

Are you trying to do this with Orion NPM 9.5/9.5.1 or 10 RC?

10 RC, but I have not tried adding the node to NPM since I can not successfully perform the snmpwalk command on the ESX server itself.

we also do not have the "port" section of our snmp.xml

our config file looks like this:

<config><snmpSettings><enable>false</enable><communities></communities><targets></targets></snmpSettings></config>

After making the changes suggested in the KB (http://support.solarwinds.com/kbase/ProblemDetail.cfm?ID=1448) our test wasn't working either (snmpwalk). However in Orion (our monitoring software) if I changed the SNMP port to 171 and monitoring worked.

Might help someone.

I had the same issue using snmpwalk. But when I added the ESX node I noticed the test button failed until I switched the port from 162 to 171. Everything looks good.

So I went back tot he ESX host and reran snmpwalk but used "localhost:171" and that worked.

Since it seems to being using port 171 as proxy it seems to make sense why I had to add the node using port 171 instead and thus snmpwalk should be the same.

Just something I found.
