snmp for linux

For some reason I can't get snmp to work with linux (fedora core 2)...Some servers will come up saying net-snmp for the machine type but the node says its up but unknown state...While others just say unknown....I tried everything possible to get the servers up but without any luck...How do I enable snmp on linux server
