ESX Server Virtual Machines Total CPU and Memory usage

In the ESX Server details I see the guages for CPU and Memory usage. What are these actually representing? From the title of the section, I assume this is the total of all VM's running on that ESX server. This does not seem to match my Virtual Center Console. For example, in the VM Console I see the host memory usage at about 56%. NPM shows 9.2%.

Is there any documentation explaining all the items in the ESX Server Detail views and how the different values are derived?

The guages are for the last reported values for the ESX host. It's not the sum.

The help files give information on VMs:

The Virtual Machine Details resource presents a table providing the following information about the selected virtual machine.

•	The VMware Hosticon gives a visual indication of the current status of the server hosting the selected virtual machine, if it is determinable. If the host is known to be up, the icon is green. If the host is known to be down, the icon is red. If the status of the host is unknown, the icon is gray.

•	Host CPU usage by this VM indicates the amount of the total processor load experienced by the host server that is due to the selected virtual machine.

•	Host memory usage by this VM indicates the amount of the total memory load experienced by the host server that is due to the selected virtual machine.

•	Host network usage by this VM indicates the amount of the total network traffic on the host server that is due to the selected virtual machine.
