Cannot stop NPM service

Hi,

I am trying to restart the Network Performance Monitor Service since it is hanging when I try to open the System Manager. It just gets to the Opening Database part and hangs. However when I open the Services Manager and try to restart the NPM it just hangs and says stopping. I have waited 10+ minutes for it to stop and it still says stopping. I was in the middle of adding some devices and a message came up saying that I've reached the limit of this license and to upgrade despite the fact that I have the unlimited license. Anyone have any suggestions?

Edit: I just installed SP1 now and it's still doing the same thing. Also it says that my polling engine is down to.

You should open a ticket or contact support- there are multiple issues here to work through...

I am still having issues with the NetPerfMon service starting and stopping. When upgrading to SP2 today the exe hung at stopping the NPM service and just spammed "Waiting for Service to stop" in the command prompt until I opened the Task Manager and manually shutdown the process. Now I am having trouble getting it started again and the polling engine is showing as being down. This has happened the last couple times when doing an upgrade, the NPM service takes forever to shutdown. After manually shutting the service down and the upgrade install finishes I get Cannot Connect to <Orion server name> when opening the system manager All services show as started in the Orion Service Manager and Windows Services, however in both NetPerfMon shows as stopping. Any ideas?

We have been having this problem since 8.5. We had a ticket open on the issue since it would cause the polling engine to stop and the service appeared to hang (with the splash screen frozen). The ticket was closed with no resolve, we were just told to wait till 9.0 came out or upgrade our equipment. In the next couple of weeks we are looking to upgrade to 9.0 but it seems that you are having this problem as well. When we upgrade we are going to start with a fresh install on both servers (SQL is on a separate server) and see if that doesn't resolve the issue. Once we get everything up and going on the new installs I will post back and see if this is the resolve we are looking for.

We're going to fix this in the next release, which is just around the corner.

I just installed SP4 and fought with this. The install wizard would not complete - said it could not stop the NetPerfMon service in a timely manner, or start it. I tried stopping all services manually first. Didn't help. I ended up stopping and disabling all SW services, rebooting, rebooting again, setting them to automatic, then running the installer again before things would complete successfully.

Once it was up I had a look with Service Manager and the Alerting, Syslog, and Trap services were not running. Did a reboot and those 3 dod not start. Started them manually and things seem fine.

But the thing that started this was getting a call about a network link being down and not getting any notification. I had a look and those same 3 services were not running - not even sure how long they were down for. I need an APM to monitor my Orion server. :-s
