Is there a performance difference between Enterprise and Standard edition MS SQL

OK so this is going to be lengthy. We are wondering what is the performance difference between MS SQL 2012 standard edition and enterprise edition with the product line. More specifically with our implementation. We currently have 5 polling servers (1 SLX and 4 additional pollers). These are supporting 24,000 elements on NPM. We also have NTA supporting 1200 interfaces, NCM supporting 1800 devices, SAM supporting 10 servers, UDT supporting 40000 interfaces, vnqm supporting 50 operations. We are currently on an 8 core HP DL380 G5 with 64 gig or memory and running Enterprise 2008 SQL. THe solarwinds apps are an instance on that server. There are 3 other database with very low usage on that database server. We running at 75% CPU usage with 40g of memory assigned to our instance.

So having said all that we are kicking around the idea of a stand alone database server. However when we price out 2012 SQL Enterprise edition there is huge sticker shock in that the cost is around $10k per 2 cores while stand edition SQL is $3400 per 2 cores. Hence my question about application performance differences between Enterprise and Standard SQL

I can't speak directly to performance metrics, but we have very large installations of SolarWinds worldwide (all are about 80%+ capacity per polling engine with about 60 engines right now). We run all of our SQL in their own dedicated environments like this:

For every 6 polling engines, we have a SQL cluster:

- 8 core, 64Gb memory

- Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

- SQL 2008 Standard

We have yet to ever see a problem with the databases in any of our environments and we have some daily reports that, upon first glance, look like they could lockup a database in a heartbeat

Ok so I’ll admit to being ignorant about MS SQL clustering. How does clustering work when you have one database? I know about fail over clustering but what you’re talking about appears to be spreading the database instance over multiple servers

Nope. Just standard failover clustering. We keep it as simple as possible.

Regarding the original question .... there have never been performance differentials between the Workgroup, Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter Editions of the various versions of SQL Server as far as the engine itself is concerned. The differentials between the editions of SQL Server have always been about features.

Now, inasmuch as some of those features include support for more CPUs or more RAM -- then indirectly there is a performance consideration if you're maxing out the available CPU/RAM on a Standard Edition server and need to upgrade to Enterprise Edition to get more CPUs/RAM installed on the server.
