Alert Engine Event Errors

I have multiple servers telling me the solarwinds.net event viewr log is full. Here is the repeated error message :

Remote console into your Orion server and right click on the My Computer icon and select Manage then expand the Event Viewer select the SolarWinds.net section. Right click on it and select Clear all events... At this point you can either write them off to an archive file (for historic reference) or just select no...

you can also right click on SolarWinds.Net -> Properties to see more Log file options...

I have cleared them out but that's not the issue....why is it filling up in the 1st place? I cleared them yesterday and its full again. Something isn't right.

which version of Orion are you on? and have you contemplated re-running the set-up wizard yet?

we have been getting the same error ALL day.

Does your Orion website time out?

I also found in the evevnt view a ASP.net error.

I've been having this problem for about 3 or 4 weekes now and Yes my website also times out. I've been uploading my logs and waiting for Solarwinds support to pinpoint the issue. for now i have a perl script the restarts the alert engine processes on all pollers.

We are also having this problem. It happened after the upgrade to 8.5. The website times out and AlertingEngine error is written to the Event Viewer stating:

Solarwinds support does not seem to know what is going on. As I have been working with them for weeks with no resolution.

I had this problem in 8.5.1 (there's another thread about it). Destiny (solarwinds tech) said she was sure it has to do with an alert that is not working right, which would agree with what y'all are thinking. She had me uncheck an alert, save, then see if the messages stop, then re-check the box and go on to the next. Kept doing that to see which one it was. Now with a distributed install that would sure take some time, and it could be more than one alert. Might be better to turn them all off and start adding them back one my one! If your event logs were being written to every 5 seconds like mine, it makes it easy to see if the problem is still there! In my case it turned out to be a more simple fix, which was just restarting the alerting service. -Debbi

Looks like I have the website crashing mostly solved. The problem in this case was the SQL server was having disk performance issues. This was being logged to the SQL server in the following way:

11/08/2007 09:04:16,spid1,Unknown,SQL Server has encountered 1 occurrence(s) of IO requests taking longer than 15 seconds to complete on file [E:\SQLDATA\MSSQL\Data\NetPerfMon_log.ldf] in database [NetPerfMon] (19). The OS file handle is 0x00000410. The offset of the latest long IO is: 0x0000000385e000

There is a lot of documentation about solving this type of problem in SQL Server. In my case I moved the log files, excluded some files from virus scanning, and did an overall cleanup on the server and was able to remedy the problem.

I have just recently upgraded from 8.1 to 8.5.1 hotfix 1 and I am now getting these errors as well

I have gone through my advance alerts and did not see anything that is out of the ordinary that would cause this.

Has anyone been able to get an answer from Solarwinds on this? I did open a ticket with support but have not heard back from support on this as of me posing this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have had this exact issue for more than two months with no resolution from support.

Environment:
- New Install Windows 2003 SE for Orion Server
- New Database on Remote Server, Windows 2003 EE, SQL 2000
- Did not import any objects, started from scratch, network discovery
- (Orig) New Install of Orion-v8.5-SLX, and Installed Hotfix 20070926

Result:
- Alerts stop to function correctly. Without alerting, this product is a brick.

Changes:
- Installed Hotfix Orion-v8.5-SLX hotfix 20070926, still unfunctional
- Installed Orion-v8.5.1, still unfunctional
- Installed Orion-v8.5.1-SP1, still unfunctional
- Installed Orion-v8.5.1-SP2, still unfunctional
- Ran "Repair Database" wizard, still unfunctional
- Copied my custom alerts, deleted original alerts, still unfunctional
- Tried enabling one alert at a time with no success
- Sent at least (10 - 15) diag.logs to support throughout the process, still unfunctional

We are considering changing to HP Openview to manage our network instead of Orion.
