Custom Volume Thresholds

Hi Everyone,

i am currently test running NPM and APM. Now I've run into a problem.

Since a global volume warn and critical level will not be suitable in a real life environment - well not in our environment with about 300 servers - i have tried to solve the problem with custom volume properties.

let me explain how I tried to accomplish that.

i have created two custom properties in volumes.

VolumePercentUsedWarning

VolumePercentUsedCritical

Now I wanted to to create the appropriate Advanced Alerts. I have choosen as trigger condition ...

field VolumePercentUsed is greater than field VolumePercentUsedWarning

BUT - it is not possible. As soon as I add the second field the first gets kicked out. (argh) that would have been a perfect solution to give every single volume a custom warning and critical level with just 2 advanced alerts.

Am I doing something wrong ? In my point of view this is really an important functionality.

Hi Tom,

it's neither text or integer. i think it's floating point number - i had to try and error all the properties type since i did not find out how to find out the property type. It is not so userfriendly but at least you can work around the missing features ... hopefully they integrate these things into the WebConsole somewhen.

It will do that if the "VolumePercentUsedWarning" custom property isn't the right type, i.e. integer vs. text.

Of course, you'll also need a third alert, too, to alert if free space reaches a minimum default level.

By the way, it is possible to set things up so that it alerts based on a custom property of VolumeFreeWarningMB. You can't use VolumeFreeWarningBytes because the integer field can only contain a maximum of 2GB in bytes. Then, because you can't do transforms on custom properties, you have to manually edit the trigger & reset SQL in the AlertDefinitions table, *and* you have to promise never to edit the advanced alert in the GUI, otherwise it will overwrite the custom SQL with whatever is defined inside that.

Hey David,

which property type did you use, im trying to do the same thing using VolumeSpaceUsed to compare with a custom property.

and im getting the same as you were. iv'e tried both Text and Integer. Both force the first field back to * when creating the alert.
