VLAN Monitoring on Cisco 2950's

I've tried looking for this topic but can't find anything that directly answers my questions.

I want to monitor the different VLANs on our 2950's but when I put in pubic@50 for vlan 50 Orion just list ports 1 - 48 and vlan 1 I can't see anyhting for VLAN 50.

Does anyone know how I can monitor VLAN 50 and all my other VLAN's?

What are you looking to monitor? If you monitor the L3 of the VLAN, you should see everything traversing the VLAN. Otherwise you'll have to monitor each interface in the VLAN.

A 2950 is a layer 2 device. In almost every case, the VLAN should always register as up. What is this "public@50" of which you speak?

There are no useful statistics from them since no actual traffic traverses them. It doesn't take an aggregate snapshot of traffic across all VLAN interfaces.

Check on the switch to see if the VLAN has an interface associated with it "show ip int brief". If not create the interface, there is no need to give it an IP address.

Just as Ian stated, you cannot monitor traffic on the VLAN interface. The only VLAN that will show up on a 2950 during an snmpwalk is the management VLAN and you cannot even get traffic statistics on that. This is because the switch is a pure layer 2 device. Even on layer 3 switches, such as the 6500, monitoring VLANs will not produce any useful statistics.

The only VLAN that will show up on a 2950 during an snmpwalk is the management VLAN and you cannot even get traffic statistics on that. This is because the switch is a pure layer 2 device. Even on layer 3 switches, such as the 6500, monitoring VLANs will not produce any useful statistics.

On the 6500 switch, I am able to pull traffic statistics on the 'unrouted' VLANS (in bps). The only problem I am having is that I need a way to show the VLAN name in my report. I have not identified a way to pull that information in the query and I am not sure that the VLAN name is even in the Orion database.

Any ideas?

i have a question about 2950 cisco switch

1. Is it a layer 3 switch ? so why its not enable for routing ?

2. If i upgrade the IOS of 2950, after that the problem of interface valn will be resolved or not ?

prblm of interface vlan is if i up one interface the second vlan interface goes down automatically
