Moving the SQL database

Hi all,
We are planning on moving the Orion NPM database to a new databse server. I can't connect to this new server from the server that the NPM service is running on currently. It seems to me that this is because the new server is not listening on port tcp/1433 for connections.
Has anyone come across this before? Using the enterprise manager, I cannot see anywhere how to enable/disable this that we have not tried already. Any suggestions gratefully received.
