Prioritising interface alerts

We have high priority interfaces and low priority interfaces monitored within Solarwinds. High priority interfaces would be uplinks and switch stack ports. Low priority interfaces are interfaces that users connect to. For high priority interfaces, we want to monitor bandwidth, display in the "Nodes with problems" box and raise an alert if they change status (up/down). For low priority interfaces, we want to monitor bandwidth but the host not to display in the "Nodes with problems" box and not create an alert if they change status (up/down).

Is there a way to do this with NPM?

This is possible through the use of "show this interface as unplugged rather than down". This can be configured on an interface via the web console when logged in as admin. When enabled, the interface will appear in an unplugged status rather than down if a client disconnects from that port for example. The unplugged status will also prevent the parent node from showing up with a down interface - this will prevent the parent node from showing up in the "nodes with problems" resource.

Regarding alerting - so long as your definitions for the alert are "when interface status is equal to down", enabling the above will take care of this too! If for whatever reason the alert is something like "when interface status is not equal to up", then you may need to reconsider the definition.
