Unable to install NPM on Server 2008 R2

Am trying to install an eval copy of NPM on a fresh Server 2008 R2 Ent server and it keeps failing with the error:

"Installation of Microsoft SQL server Express failed. Invalid exit code: 15359"

Runing through the quick install guide I have followed all steps to install server 2008 and IIS but I cant get past this point of the install.

Any suggestions? I dont have access to a full version of SQL and I would rather not purchase one just to test this product.

Found a full version of SQL server 2008 Enterprise. After getting SQL server up and running NPM installed just fine.

you could download and install sql express outside of the install wizard.

When i did my initial install I had to log in as a local admin and disable the UAC, so you might want to give that a shot also.

Thanks for the info guys! I did a seperate install of SQL 2005 express and it installed fine. Looks like the NPM still errors out on the DB creation in the configuration wizard.

UAC has been disabled and I set no SA password for the SQL install. Could it be 2008 R2 not liking SQL express 2005?

Do you know more details about that error while creating database? Are you sure you use SQL Account which has permissions to create new database etc.?

You will have to excuse me Im a very rusty Windows admin and who has spent the last 5 years on Cisco gear and Linux servers

Im not sure what account NPM is trying to use at DB creation as it never ask me what to use. I am only prompted for an account in the configuration wizard when Im asked what DB to connect to.

here is the ConfigurationWizard.log snippet with the errors. It looks like NPM is unable to make a connection to the DB but Im not sure why.

Is this going to be easier to just demo with server 2003 or come up with a copy of SQL server 2008? I was really hoping install would have been a lot smoother.

I do appreciate everyones help on this though...

Do you use SQL Authentication or Windows Authentication?

If you use SQL Authentication can you check that it is enabled on SQL Server?

Are you able to connect with used credentials to given SQL Server via Management Studio or another tools?
