Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
Devices not responding toSNMP query
stivey79
We are monitoring a number of devices in an operations center and occassionally we will loose SNMP access to the systems. Usually someone has reconfigured and not notified us. Is there a way to monitor and alert on devices we have lost or lose SNMP access to? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bryan,
Have you tried the "pre-canned" alert - SNMP password changed?
It should send an alert if the password changes on any monitored device.
Not sure how this works if SNMP is completely brokem though.
You might have to experiment with this.

Say you are monitoring a network interface or volume on these devices.
How about you set an alert that will trigger when the interface/volume switches to the "unknown" state - which will happen when you lose SNMP access to the device.

Network Guru,
Thanks for your suggestion. I did create the alert and this alert is designed to fire when the SNMP is changed on the management server only. I tried a number of times and was unable to get the alert to fire when I changed the community string on the device. But as soon as I changed the SNMP string in Network Performance Monitor the alert fired. This is not very useful since we are the ones that control the system and would not change the SNMP string unless directed. I knew about the interface set to UNKNOWN because that is how I create the report we send out to the Administrators for SNMP connectivity loss. I can set up an alert but it will be cumbersome at best. I wish SW would come up with something for the loss of SNMP access.
Thanks,
Bryan
