Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
NPM on SQL 2005

Does anyone have any experience with the NPM database on SQL 2005? Or, having the database on a seperate server in general?

W've been running on a seperate SQL 2000 server for the past 6 months and found that it has improved performance on the SQL server and Orion server as we had Observer and a few other apps on the Orion\SQL box.

We have two pollers (one just polls, the other is also the web server) feeding a separate SQL Server device. Performance is very, very good and I would definitely recommend this setup for larger (10,000+) nodes. However, since our SQL Server also supports other applications we have to change the initial SQL account from SA (sys admin) to another level of use. This is because the built-in DB manager with Orion doesn't play nice with the rest of the SQL apps. Still, the only time you need this access is when you are reinstalling or upgrading the app, and then you can have the nice DBA's reset the rights before you upgrade.
Setup is easy - just point your Orion install to the SQL Server and database file with an account that has SA rights for database modification.
On a larger note, I would like to see Solarwinds move up the food chain a little and allow for the application to be installed without the built-in database manager. This would allow some of us larger shops to let the DBA's handle the SQL care and feeding. Also, what about allowing for some really powerful reporting tools to work against the NPM database?

James,
We run reports against our Orion DB using Crystal Reports.
Also have built data cubes with Excel for recuring status reports.
Our next step is to integrate into our CMDB (Change Management DB) so that alerts can be suppressed during a change project.
Thanks,

Thanks - I am heading in that direction (using an external reporting tool against NetPerfMon) I just haven't had the time to devote to executing the reports I want to generate.
