Configuring an Alert to fire when a specific Class of Service exceeds a utilization or bandwidth threshold

I am working at a client whom runs NPM as well as NTA. They use Class of Service on their MPLS circuit. They need for an alarm / alert to fire to notify them of when a specific Class of Service crosses a 2MG or a 66% utilization threshold (3 Mg circuit).

NTA clearly shows the utilization for each specific class of service. How can we use this data to fire an alert?

As long as you have the bandwidth setup correct on the interface and it's reflected on the interface in NPM setup you alert with an interface trigger condition like this:

Has anyone solved this yet? I am looking for a tool that will tell me specifically how much of each CoS is used up at any time, and possibly alert on it.

I have routers with AF1 AF2 etc, each have a 1MB slice of a 10-MB pipe. I want to be able to report and alert on the utilisation as a percentage of the actual CoS band, NOT the % of the total interface bandwidth.

I have NTA (unlimited license) and I have Fluke Tracker. neither of those products seem to do it. i would like to be able to say SolarWinds Can, and throw the other tools out

As of yet I have not found a way to do the reporting part other than a line graph. I have configured a custom alert so that if one of my Cos classes goes above a particular bandwidth usage, say over 2mbps, I receive an e-mail stating what the usage is in mbps. In order to do those, you must use the Orion Universal Device poller.

With the program open start by using a "New Universal Device Poller"

In the field "OID" paste "1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.166.1.15.1.1.11" and click on "Browse MIB Tree" you should get a window that looks like this:

Find your device such as i did(GAMPLSRTR01) and click "Test". If your device supports the OID, on the window you should see results such as:

but if not it should say "The OID is not supported" and this will not work for the device. If your device passed the test, take note of the "Row ID"s for each row ID represents a particular CoS class. in my example above row 1079.1091 is transferring 337000 bps, or 337 kbps, or .337 mbps. The only way to decipher which "row ID" belongs to what class is to compare the output of this test to the output of a "Show policy-map" or equivilant on the Router and match each class bandwidth usage to the Row ID usage.

Next press "Select" and get back to the window in the 1st picture posted above. Name the Poller, then click on the "+Show advanced Options" and make sure they match the image below:

I have not messed with the "Group" portion of UDP yet so default will do.

Next Click on "Finish", and open NPM so you can configure an alert. Click on "Alerts" then on "Configure Advanced Alerts" and then "New". Name the alert, Enter a description, Enable the Alert and decide on what frequency you would like the alert checked for.

The next part can get tricky but as long as you can correlate what row ID belongs to which CoS value you should be able to set this up correctly.

Next click on the "Trigger Condition" tab and configure it to match the image below, substituting your poller name, Row ID, and Rate value:

as you can see, the alert is going to alert me when the rate of the given Row ID in Poller GAMPLSCoS reaches a rate of 1600000 bps, or 1.6mpbs.

After all of this is configured, make sure to configure the notification portion of it, wither e-mail or some other sort, under "trigger actions" and "reset actions". Test the alert to make sure everything works and make sure the advanced alert is enabled.

so Solarwinds, are you watching? this guy has just invesnting something amazing.... if you can do this out of the box, you will be making a ump ahead of many more expensive products... add the resource for showing bandwidth usage within the CoS, and then add the reports, and then add default alerting andf you are there....

You can already get the data, there is nothing crazy about it, it is just either something vendors forget about or something they find hard to do....

Maybe it is only communications providers who care about this or MSP's
