Orion Help. Multiple Questions.

I am helping with setting up Orion to monitor a large network.

Question 1: Is there a way through macroing or other to in a way future proof if a device is upgraded? For instance we use Cisco Catylist 2950's we are in the process of upgrading to 2960's. I would like to avoid having to re do all of the interfaces.

Question 2: Is there a way to monitor an interface that currently has nothing attached to it to where it will not show up on the web interface, but when a defice is plugged into that interface it is polled?

Question 3: Is there a way to add more levels to the node tree beyond 3?

No—even if the IP address remains on the same on the upgrade, I'm pretty sure that the interfaces on the 2960s will each be given their own *new* interface IDs.

What I mean in question 2 is I have serveral interfaces on a router. not all of them are in use. I want to be able to select to monitor all of the interfaces but not have the ones that aren't being used show up on my Orion NPM website.

What I mean in question 3 is: I have been handed this project and I only have 3 levels of criteria to group nodes byin the "node list-by device" pane. is there a way to add move levels in the Orion NPM?

Administratively shutdown ALL un-used interfaces. un-used/open interfaces only leads to problems regardless the overall size of network.

The limit is 3, but you can add Custom Properties and group on them, but don't get carried away with it, the bigger the network, the slower this resource gets; and eventually you will find yourself removing the ALL Nodes resource from all views anyway...

I would like to expand on this that i pulled from the manual.

All Nodes – Tree

The All Nodes - Tree resource provides a status icon and the node name for each node monitored by Orion NPM. Clicking a node name opens the Node Details view for the selected node.

Clicking Edit allows you to edit the All Nodes - Tree Resource Title and group displayed nodes into three levels, using any of the following node properties:

I need to go beyond 3 levels. I have a switch, 20 switches behind that, another 300 switches behind that, and then 3-10 devices hanging off of those 300 switches. I need to be able to break it down in the web view beyond 3 levels.

But seriously: the stated limit is three, I'm sure the All Nodes Resource could be edited, I'm just not sure how; or you could do a Feature Request for a future version of Orion.

The All Nodes - Tree Resource is a hog in bigger networks, and will cripple your Orion while its loading. Its similar to the Network Wide Resources that Josh recommends not to use on any commonly view pages.

Have you considered using Mapmaker to create these topology views?
