Orion NPM and network adapters

I am running NPM/polling engine/Web console from one server. The SQL database is external. I have one network adapter with one IP address. What is the recommended. If I add another adapter, what is the recommended configuration. Is this in a document anywhere? I would guess it would help to configure the Web Site with the second adapter and let the polling engine and sql use the first adapter. Does that make any sense?

The Polling Engine will bind the first adapter it finds, therefore you need to list it as first.

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections.

Click on Advanced > Advanced Settings.

Set the Polling Engine adapter to be first in the list.

Concerning the Web Console adapter, this can be configured using the IIS console or the Orion Configuration Wizard.

Start > run > inetmgr + ok

Expand your Computer, then Web Sites.

Right-click on the SolarWinds NetPerfMon website and select Properties.

In the Web Site tab, configure it to listen only on the second adapter's IP Address.

Click on Ok to apply the changes.

Is there an elegant way to split the polling traffic from the database connection?

I need to poll from a specific IP address (as a result of firewall rules and access lists) but provide the backend database connection from a second interface.

The method to bind the poller to the first interface is clear, but any suggestions regarding the SQL server side of things?

Hi Louie,

Another consideration might be to leverage IP routing within Windows. If you can put each adapter on a separate IP network you can let windows route the traffic destined to polling subnets to one gateway and the db traffic bound to the sql server subnet via the other adapter.
