NPM insists a device is down despite being able to ICMP and SNMP fine.

Good day, thanks for looking.. any help is appreciated!

I am trying to add an "uptime devices" room alert into NPM 9.5 SP5 w/hotfix. The device can ping fine, even the custom poller returns a good value, SNMP walking the device is fine. When I add it to NPM as either a SNMP or ICMP only device it goes red/down immediately despite poll-now, rediscovering.. adding by name or IP.

I thought SW used ICMP to determine up/down status, what I am I missing here?!?

Are you doing the SNMP-Walk from a different machine than the poller? It could be an ACL issue not allowing ICMP.

Hey Congo, I am doing both the ping test and the snmp walk from the NPM sever just to be sure.. that why it is so confusing why when I setup this node even as ICMP only it retuns a "down" status..

That is quite interesting. I have yet to run into that one. I would say a support ticket is in order.

I seem to have the same issue. It's as if the database is not updating correctly.

My SQL DBA said she saw an excessive amount of errors in the database. We are still working on it today.

I'll update with more details as the come.

Oh man, please say it ain't so! I just closed a 3-day service call with SW support about wireless not updating that ended up needing a lot of DB work!

May I ask what kind of device is giving you problems? If you set it up as just ICMP and it reports proper up/down status then thats something else I can tell you about.

If I delete the device and add it again, all works well. Its as if the database gets stuck....

It does report proper up/down status....

It seems to happen to any device, we have mostly Cisco devices and Windows servers, but no APM (yet).

Hey Sedmo, no joy on the ICMP string.. a SW tech had changed that a while ago to troubleshoot another issue so I had high hopes that by changing that it would fix the issue but nothin. I have it set at "1" now with 3000ms response time allowed.

Family, I have heard more and more people complaining about that issue. I have had it on a couple devices myself but most of the time restarting SNMP on the device corrects the issue, one other time I had to allow 64bit counters..

Thanks agian, still need to find the root of this issue.. I can't see it being the additinal "1" on the ICMP causing it to be to large, I will try to ping with a larger packet to test perhaps..
