Network engine stops working BUT website OK

For the past week we have had problems with Orion where it would stop statistics and alerts, but the web front would show if something goes down. When I log into the server and open the management console it just hangs bringing up the database. I am not getting anything out of the logs, and if I try to restart the service through the solarwinds control panel it hangs in stopping, with only a server reboot being able to correct it. We are running version 7.8.5 and currently looking to upgrade to the latest version onto a new server, but need to have this one working.

If I understand you correctly, essentially all SNMP statistics collection stops yet ICMP based status polling is still continuing? If this is the case I am curious if the behavior started after the addition of some nodes. There were rare instances in the 7.x series where a bad response form a device could cause the polling engine to spin and not continue polling.

I find the Solarwinds tool does not reliably stop the services, especially when they are in a hung state.
Your best bet is to stop the Netperfmon service from the Windows Services GUI (right click My Computer > Manage my computer > Services)

With a large Orion installation it can take a minute or two to for the service to stop.
In extreme cases you can stop the process in Task Manager.
I find it very rare to have to reboot a Win2k3 server these days.
