Can a server be monitored only using FQDN?

HI All,

We have been recently given a requirement where there are 2 servers which they have requested to know if we can know only monitor it using FQDN. There will be DNS settings done from the appropriate team and when 1 of these server goes down the transfer of traffic will be decided by a switch( i dont have the type of switch they are using to do this).

So its kind of active active mode and the switch will decide on the traffic conversion. If i add these 2 servers as separately then will Solarwinds allow it and give me all monitoring parameters?

You wont be able to add both servers on the same FQDN, unless you use agents (with agent initiated communication).

Typically what I would do, would be to monitor both underlying devices by their IP addresses and then add the FQDN as a seperate ICMP polled only node.

I would then set up the application/service monitoring onto the FQDN defined node.

That way the underlying nodes have separate history (as they are separate servers), this allows you to separate the servers history, if you have have performance issues.

And the FQDN will show the state of the application/service, where ever it is running.

However, you may need to have a play with this to get it right.

Little things, such as how long does the DNS fail over take, might have to be factored in to the alert definitions, to stop false alerts.
