Different response variable for node types?

I'm extremely NEW to both Thwack and Solarwinds (reforming/recovering HPOV and CiscoWorks addict).  I was wondering if there is a way to configure NPM to respond differently to different node types (isRouter, isSwitch, isPrinter, etc.).

Example:

A router or switch don't respond to a query in the default 100ms window, I get an alert.  However, if a printer doesn't respond in that window, I don't really care.  I only care if the printer is actually down, and couldn't careless if it is not responding in a timely manner.

I'm using 9.5.

One way to do it would be to assign custom properties to devices.  You can then use those custom properties to modify alerts.
