Using 9.5, just setup monitoring via SNMP on our ESX hosts. I was disappointed to see the way memory is monitored (at least by default). I read some posts and wonder if people have their information straight on memory terminology for VMWare.
Here is what Orion and the VIC show for me comparitively:
Orion VIC
----- -----
size - 24gb 24gb
space used - 3.2gb memory active - ~2.9gb
????? memory usage - 67%
????? memory granted - 22.5gb
My question is, is there a way to get orion to show the "usage" statistic that VIC shows for the ESX server?
This is the most important statistic for memory. It is what vmware has setup by default for it's memory alarms. From my discussions with VMWare techs, monitoring the "active" statistic like Orion does isn't that helpful, because it shows only what the ESX server is actively using and swapping in and out of memory at that time, whereas the "usage" statisic shows how much is actually loaded into memory. Right now VIC reports I'm almost 70% full, but since Orion's guage is based on active memory, it says I'm at 20%.
