SQL Database Size

I recently noticed that the size of the Orion DB had risen to 66gig, I thought this strange so checked the size in SQL manager and it tells me that out of the 66gig, 52gig is free space within the DB.

Why is there so much free space within the DB and does Orion need it?

I'm don't know a lot about SQL but is there anyway of reducing this free space to about 10 or 20 gig?

I have noticed the same thing, however eventhough Nightly Maintenance is supposed to reduce the DB Size, I find myself manually running a Compact and Repair from DB Manager and this helps to keep the Database size in check. This is also an issue in the Engineers Toolkit using MSDE.

The nightly maintenance only summarises the data, which in turn leaves behind blank space. You should use the compact portion of the scheduled backup (SolarWinds Database Manager) to compact the database size. I had one customer reduce his DB from around 30GB down to 7.5GB by doing this

Did a compact and now the db size is down to 6 gig and I've scheduled this to happen weekly.
