SNMP and other UNIX host processes' status

Hi,

Of late i came to know that SNMP is not used to find out the Up/Down status of a node. I am relatively new to this field. Please correct me if i am wrong.

We would like to monitor a number of Unix host processes like SNMP, NTPD, SYSLOGD, CRON and SSH because a number of jobs have been scheduled daily to run during off business hours and i want to be notified if any of these services are down. Is the status of ntpd, ssh, cron and syslogd, etc(and other OS processes) determined by using snmp? if yes, how do i get notified if the SNMP service is down which in turn cannot find the status of other processes?

Yes, I believe this can be done through SNMP. However, to be able to do this, you'll need the Application Performance Monitor (APM) module which extends NPM to monitor processes.

I am using APM 2.5 right now and I have set up alerting using a Trigger Condition: "Process Instance Count is equal to 0". I have also turned stopped snmpd services on a lab system and I am expecting Solarwinds to alert me that syslogd, ntpd, sshd and snmpd especially are down. Is the process i did right? What do i need to do to find out if those system processes are down?

Have you created application templates and assigned them to nodes already? If so, you might be better served if your set your trigger alert to something like

Application Name is equal to <your application template name>
Application Status is not equal to Up

Now, since you're on UNIX, APM will monitor the processes through SNMP. However, if you stop the snmpd service, there will be no way for APM to determine whether the services are actually down. However, if you defined the alert trigger as indicated above, it should still alert you since the application status will now be unknown (i.e. not up).
