i have a request to use IM for alerting.
i sure hate trying to re-invent the wheel so to speak...
has anyone gotten this to work with Orion ALERTS? My task will be using Microsoft Instant Messenger.

You might want to check out this .NET program that allows you to send instant messages over MSN Messenger via command line. Hope this helps.
