Orion 6 vs. WhatsUpGold?
willwork4cashflow
I'm currently evaluating both of these packages and wanted to see if anyone here can help me make an educated decision about these two packages. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Justin

Hmmm....I can't see how WhatsUpGold even comes close to Orion. How far have you evaluated Orion? To me, it was a no brainer.

I think it depends mostly on what you want to do with the programs. If you're looking to ping monitor, then SW may be a little bit overkill.
However, if you're looking to get detailed charts and graphs for statistics all in on box, then SW is the best out-of-the-box solution I've seen yet. There is the Denika plug-in for WUG by Somix, but it's pretty much a nice front-end to MRTG. I think SW's min/max/average charts blow these out of the water.
WUG does support SNMP trapping, which is really kinda nice...and Somix also makes a syslog plugin for it. Those two things would make really nice SW features, BTW.
I'd recommend trying evals of both and determine which one suits your needs (and your budget) best.

The best thing for you to do is get them both in and evaluate them. I can say this, NPM is potentially the best piece of network management software I have seen in my 10 years of working with SNMP and management systems - it's simple, fast and does a LIMITED job. I emphasise limited as it is lacking in custom mib support and no trap processing, both of which I consider to be fundamental for any netowrk managemnt system. However, if these aren't issues of concern to you (and Solarwinds assure us these issues will be addressed in future releases), NPM is the product to give serious consideration to.

Thanks Guys! I have decided to go with NPM over WUG now that I have evaluated both.
Thanks again for your feedback!

Personally i run them both, one does all my graphing, the other does my service testing. WUG is 1k for unlimited devices. So it all works out if you can get both

Good point. I'm really considering both as I can see the value of each product. Do you run both of them on the same system/machine? I was going to use ServersAlive but I need a better web access than it currently offers. Thanks for your feedback!
