Starting Solarwinds All over again

Hi all,

When I arrived to my new work I found the next Solarwinds structure: A main Solarwinds server where NPM and the SQL Server where stored and its backup server. Each of them has a 32 bits Windows anda 4GB of RAM. During this months I have been having real problema due to the amount of memory the SQL Server takes from those 4GBs. Even the main server has restarted itsself sometimes because it was usaing the entire 4GBs and was paging.

My questions is, which is the optimun structure for it? Separated serves for Solarwinds and the Database? Is there something I can change to solve the problem mantaining the actual configuration?

Pablo,

The Configuration Wizard provides an opportunity either to specify an existing SQL Server and instance or to create a new one to use for your Orion installation.

The optimal configuration is to have SQL Server on it's own system using a RAID 10 array and as much memory as you can give it (ours has 32Gb of memory).

I agree with byrona. I would also recommend having a separate RAID array for the DB OS & DB Log files for larger environments. The Orion NPM Admin guide has recommended specifications.

if your environment is small and you want to keep SQL on the same box, you can configure the SQL server to only take 512/768/1024 MB though SQL management studio, properties of the server, memory, set maximum. But that could make SQL run a little slower.

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your help. I have set the maximun memory for the database in 3GB. I hope it starts working better and does not restart again.

Anyway, I may buy a new server and move Solarwinds to it. And give the 4GB server entirely to the Database. I have seen that you have told me that you have a 32GB server for it. Do I need that much¿? The Windows I actually have is a 32 bits and I would need to change it too.
