Replacing current SW box with a new server
jakester03
SW is currently running on a workstation with a local database. What's the correct order of upgrading to accomplish the following:
- Install Ver 8 to the new server
- Move the local database on the existing workstation to a centralized SQL cluster
- Make the new server with ver 8 installed point to that sql cluster DB
Thanks!
Jake

I did something similar in order to test version 8.
I did the following.
1) Installed SQL on new box
2) backed up existing DB and restored it to new SQL box
3) installed V8
4) ran config wizard and pointed to new DB I had just restored
At this point it was pretty much ready to go, however since the name of my server had changed, all the nodes were still configured for the wrong polling engine. To fix this I had to go into "Monitor Polling Engines" application, and from there under the servers menu go to "poller load balancing" From there I was able to select all my nodes and change their polling engine to my new box and I was off and running.
One thing I will point out though, I kept my database local to my polling engine for this reason. If my network goes down, and Orion can no longer reach a centralized SQL server over the network, I will not get any alerts of the network being down. For me this was a major problem, so I kept the SQL server local instead of leveraging our existing SQL cluster. One other possible solution we had was to use a dedicated NIC with a cross-over cable on both my orion server and SQL server to take the network out of the equation as much as possible.
