I am in a new environment and working with SW. I am curious on what are some custom alerts you have on your routers and switches? So far I have the basic node up/down. How can I create one for the stack cables?
There are a number of stack related alerts included as out-of-the-box alerts.
The custom alerts I use for switches is based on syslog messages. So things like power failure, temperature, eigrp changes etc, I alert on that.
Do you know if on NMP for the node down alerts if it has to be set as "not equal to up" in order to get the alerts? I think at a certain version on some devices you have to set it as that.
I'm not sure of NPM versions requiring that but some nodes may go "unknown" instead of down. For all my Cisco devices I just use "down". For servers and applications you could use "not equal to up".
Using the "not equal to up" option, you should always get a down email.
It looks like if you set node status is equal to Down then you will get the alert you are looking for.
