Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
High CPU load - dllhost.exe IISUSER_SOLARWINDS
soap2005
I've recently migrated ORION NPM 7.7 on a new 2003 server.
I've noticed that dllhost.exe run by IISUSER_SOLARWINDS runs very high and make my CPU go up to 99-100%.
In the graph I can see that the CPU runs max for about 4 hours and than runs 2 hours normal and than 4 hours max CPU again.
Has anyone got a idea of how to resolve this problem?
Currently there are only up to 5 users who use the web interface.

Wow ! That's pretty wild.
You can get a detailed status of what object within the web site is eating CPU resources from Component Services.
Start "Component Services" from Start Menu->Programs->Administrative Tools->Component Services
Expand the "Component Services" tree until you see "SolarWinds Orion NPM".
Expand the "SolarWinds Orion NPM" tree and select "Components". Wait a couple seconds (you have to wait).
The right click on "Components" and select the "Status View".
Objects that are running will have a large Call Time number. The Call Time value is in milliseconds.
It's ok to have Objects created or In Use, but no objects should have a large call time.
The actual call time will vary by the type of object. An Application object will take a few seconds, a chart maybe 10-20 seconds, and a report may be much longer.
Also, check the IIS logs. Is someone or something constantly hitting your web site ?
We have seen CPU load go to 100% when someone was attacking a web server before.

Thanks for the reply.
I've done what you told and I noticed that de component OrionNPMWeb.Chart goes to 49sec when I go to Network Trends.
The charts on this page never get competed I only get a red cross where the picture sould be.
Also when I don't go to Network Trends the dllhost.exe run by IISUSER_SOLARWINDS runs from time to time 90% even do in the components list only the Gauge and Chart show a Call Time(ms) of 800-1000 and Alerts 165ms for a view seconds.

We also see the same problems, everything ok with 7.5 install, migrated to 7.7 Have had serious performance issues.
Did check the component status, but there where no Objects with high Call Time, even if the dllhost.exe run by IISUSER_SOLARWINDS Ran at 100% load.
Also checked the IIS Logs, everything OK there.
Navigated between "Overview" and "Top10", while "Overview" responds immediately, "Top10" takes 30 second plus. Followed the Status view of the Solarwinds Orion NPM Components. The OrionNPMWeb.Application was (Objects (1) - Activated (1)) Immediately after clicking at "Top10". Then nothing happened with the Components status for approx 30sec, before the "Top10" page showed up.
The server is running on 2003, had no perf issues before upgrading to 7.7 running a fairley small system with approx 100 nodes.
Any Idea for where to go next ?

I've done de following:
A)
- Started indexing services on the interpub folder
- Run a Defrag on all drives
- Closed all I.E. webpage’s
- IISUSER_SOLARWINDS is now a member of administrators on de server.
- Unloaded the COM+ in the shutdown menu
- Restarted the IIS service in the same shutdown menu
- Open 6 webpage’s on 2 workstations
The result:
It worked fine for about a hour or so, but after that it began to show its usual symptoms.
COM+ OrionNPMWeb.Application goes to Objects/Activated = 5
All the other counters are 0
In the Task manager however dllhost.exe by IISUSER_SOLARWINDS runs 54-98% CPU. (54% when the NPMpoller demands some CPU too)
The webpage refresh is set to 2min cycle.
Has anyone got an idea of what to do next?

Looks like a problem with 7.7 to me.....;-(
Hopefully this isssue wil be resolved by Solarwinds soon, because also in my case version 7.5 was running fine until we upgraded to 7.7.
This resulted in CPU loads of 100%, slow performance on the same hardware where 7.5 was doing OK.
Are there more people who have simulair experiences after their upgrade or new installation of Orion 7.7?

Hello. Based upon what I see in this thread thus far there are at least two scenarios in play here.
First, with Version 7.7 we introduced features so that the Orion website will allow you to launch tools from the SolarWinds toolsets by "right-clicking" on the node or interface name. We have seen some cases where if the active-X component that is used to accomplish this isn't installed correctly the Orion webpages will load very slowly. To test this, simply go into the Orion website administration page and disable the browser integration for the Orion web account that you're using. If the website loads more quickly with this setting, please contact me directly at josh@solarwinds.net and we can troubleshoot this issue.
Secondly, with respect to the Orion web pages loading slowly and the Network Trends charts having a long call time or not loading at all, this issue is typically related to SQL Server performance. In order to generate a network-wide network trend chart you have to crunch through a tremendous amount of data. For this reason, we don't recomend placing these charts on your user's views or on any default/summary views. You can increase the performance of these charts by improving SQL performance, limiting the charts to specific groups of nodes/interfaces, and sometimes by adding additional indexes to the SQL database.

Ok
I've disabled the acitve-X component on all accounts and the server has run the whole day nice and normal, no super high CPU loads any more.
Question:
1) Is there a way that when a user logsin on the webpage that the webpage won't ask him to install this component.
2) Why does the vieuw Network Trends still show a red X at every place where there should be a chart?
Or better how can I make it show the charts in Network Trends?
--Edit
*2) After increasing the memory bank this issue was resolved.

I went into the Orion website administration page and disabled the browser integration for the Orion web account that I'm using.
The website loads more quickly with this setting.

If you are not using the Browser Integration (Launch Engineer's Edition Toolset from the Web site), then it should be disabled.
The client browser will request the active-x plug-in from the web site on every page until the client acknowledges it.
Then it will no longer request it.
If you have active-x objects disabled in your browser, and have not installed the Engineer's Edition toolset, your
browser may download the active-x plug-in on EVERY page and then discard it.
We have seen this configuration cause each web page to load slowly.
soap2005
Is there a way to prevent it from requesting the active-x plug-in to be installed in a correct way?
